Chile President’s State Dinner Wine forFormer U.S President Obama

In 2011, Chile President Sebastian Pinera Echenique toasted with the Chile and world renowned Montes Purple Angel in his state banquet for U.S president Obama and his wife.

Background of the Winery

Motes is one of the most famous wineries in the South American country- Chile. Founded in 1988, Motes winery has over 600 hectare of vineyards and is well known internationally for producing high quality red wine; more than 90% of its wine are exported to over 75 countries in the globe which makes it the top 5 wine exporter in Chile.

The 2015 Montes Purple Angel was made with the long-lost rare variety Carmenere grapes which were thought to have extinct in their place of origin Bordeaux,France but were later rediscovered in 1994 in Chile.

The Carmenere grapes are grown in the region of Marchigue and Apalta which located in the Colchagua Valley down the Andes, only 25 km away from the Pacific Ocean. These areas have a large diversity of soil which include granite and rock glaciers;the flat terrain, on the other hand, is a natural helper to keep the soil moist evenly. On top of that, the sufficient sunlight and ocean breeze at night make it the ideal place to grow Carmenere grapes and no doubt gain it the reputation of the best wine region in Chile.

The story of Purple Angle

The unique label of the wine depicts an angel holding a bunch of grapes. One of the founders, Douglas Murray, had two fatal accidents in the past that could have killed him. Fortunately, he survived and was slightly hurt, so he was grateful to the angel that safeguarded him and suggested to the other 3 business partners that he wanted to make the angel the 5th business partner and let it appear in their wine label.
